The Gomez residence

In Austin’s growing East Side neighborhood, the Gomez family decided to remodel a home and along with it both front and back yards which had previously been only sod grass and native ground cover. The design framed an armature around the house, allowing for both back and front sides of the house to be easily accessible. Right out of the back double sliding door, the space uses a large deck and concrete retaining wall to create an entertainment space, plant beds, and an outdoor shower. New sod, trellises, an allee of anacacho orchid trees, and a large sandbox created play space for young daughter Frankie and dog. The design cuts into steep topographies to create native planting beds and carved space for various activities. On this project, I served as the designer, contractor, and builder.

the Davis Residence

The Davis Family, freshly moved from Virginia to Austin, Tx, decided that their outdated landscape needed a hefty remodel. With plants and infrastructure dated about 40 years, we focused on those elements and kept hardscapes where they lay. Since Merrill adheres mostly to the concepts of Feng Shui, I designed a garden that overlapped micro-climates with the 5 elements of Feng Shui to form space and flow within the garden The overall planting style used native shade plants and ferns to reference the Chinese/Japanese style gardens. Again I managed this project from design through management and installation.

Blackford Residence

The Blackford Family needed to update their recently purchased property in south Austin to accommodate their new child and outdoor living style. The design needed to bring some order to an oddly shaped lot and give space for both their garden and play area for their child and friends. The permaculture elements were placed within immediate access to the kitchen, while the new open play area was maintained within eye sight of many rooms within the house. Buffer plantings around the open grass area added an extra element of privacy in a tightly packed subdivision.
